What to do when you feel confused, lost, or unsure.

Have you ever noticed how often you feel confused throughout your day? Did you know that confusion is an emotion that’s usually created with your thoughts? Did you know that confusion is often a precursor to anxiety? Did you know that we can examine all of this and learn to pause and alter our thinking before anxiety takes over? Sound good? Let’s get into it…

“Ugh, I don’t know.”

“I don’t know what to do."

“I don't know what the right decision is.”

“I don't know how."

“I don’t know what’s best.”

“I don’t know what I should do.”

“I don’t know what they want me to do.”

“I don’t know what God wants me to do.”

These are all thoughts that lead us to feeling confused and unsure. Feeling confused can be uncomfortable but, if we understand that feeling this way isn't a problem, it's just an invitation to become curious, we can stop it from becoming anxiety and stop ourselves from spinning in other not useful emotions.

When you feel confused, ask yourself…

What is confusion asking me to examine, feel, change, or let go of?

Examples:

When I feel confused about the next steps in my business, is this an invitation to simplify the way I do things?

When I feel confused about what to eat, is it because I’m being invited to make a healthier choice but resisting it?

When I feel confused during a conversation, is it an invitation to be humble and listen more?

When I feel confused about making relationship decisions, am I being asked to be honest about what’s working and what isn’t?

When I feel confusion about my past or something beyond my control, am I being invited to simply let go?

When I feel confused, is it simply an invitation to sit with the discomfort of it to learn that confusion isn’t anything to run away from?

When you ask yourself these questions, it invites a far more useful emotion, and it’s one of my favorites…curiosity. When you’re curious, you’re brain starts searching for understanding, clarity, and solutions.

When you feel confusion without awareness, you’re on autopilot which will lead you to a sense of stress, urgency, or anxiety.

But, if you consciously start noticing when you feel, confused, unsure, or lost then you can PAUSE and choose what you want to think and feel. You can choose thoughts that create curiosity, determination, peace, trust, acceptance or creativity.

In addition to asking yourself what confusion is inviting you to examine, feel, change, or let go of, here are some other thoughts to try on when you PAUSE after feeling unsure or confused…

“Feeling confused is not a problem, it’s just an invitation.”

“Feeling confused is uncomfortable, and that’s okay.”

“I only need to know the next right step, not the whole staircase.”

“Everything is figureoutable.”

“There's no right or wrong, just a lot of rights.”

“I’ve figured out so many things in my life, this is no different.”

“I always figure things out.”

“I’ll set this aside for now and just watch for answers to come, they always do.”

“This is not life or death.”

“God doesn’t care, They will help me no matter what I choose.”

“It’s not a matter of should or shouldn’t, it’s a matter of what lights me up.”

“I don’t have to decide, I can just be confused for a while.”

“There’s a simple, powerful solution to everything. I wonder what it is in this circumstance.”

Feeling confused isn’t a problem, just remember to…

  • Notice when you are feeling confused, unsure, or lost.

  • PAUSE!

  • Identify what you were just thinking.

  • Ask yourself what confusion is inviting you to examine, feel, change, or let go of.

  • See where that curiosity takes you and ponder it.

  • Remind yourself that it’s okay if answers don’t come right away.

  • Use one of the above thoughts to help you stay in useful emotions.
